View Full Version : Spot the Bug :The place to report things that aren't quite right with the new website
hi everyone
we've moved the server and upgraded the software, but as with every move there are always a few things that are out of place or just plain missing
This is the place to tell us what's gone wrong, missing, not quite right or just plain weird.
We will work through them, there is already a list, please be patient.
thanks
Zozzer and Mr Scott

The "Recent Forum Posts" column/box on the right hand side of the home page doesn't appear to be updating.
That is all.
P.
I tried sending a PM to Paul and received a PROXY ERROR screen on the .com domain
It kicked me out of IE and I couldn't log back in for a few mins - hence email sent to Paul & Zozzer.
EDIT: posting ^^^^ that I got the PROXY ERROR too!
:zap:
F:censored:G proxy errors!
Grrrrrrr......
We are still doing stuff, bear with us

New posts button said there were no new posts since my last visit even though at least 13 threads had new posts.
Will keep an eye on it.

I have noticed this also, but if I click the 'HOME' button, the 'recent posts' updates.
edit: or maybe not every time.
I have just duplicated a post in a thread because 'errors have occurred with you post.' Clearly they hadn't!
May I ask you to include a screenshot of the error if you get one please
I should also say we are tweaking the site all week so please be patient...
Thanks for the updates chaps

.co.uk url not found here
At the risk of repeating myself, again, it's going to take at least another 24 hours for the old site to forward to this one - that's beyond our control, it's down to the way the internet and nameservers work.
It may take Google a few weeks, yes weeks, to completely catch up with things as well.
One thing I would recommend you all do, if you are seeing the old site, is in your browser, whichever one you use, find "reset cache", this forces your browser to look at new content and forget what it's seen, a word of caution though, this induced amnesia may effect other sites you look at causing them to reload.
Thanks for the feedback and please be patient as we work through a long list of things to sort out over the next few weeks and even months. There's no such thing as a "finished" website!

The  (thumbsup) smiley is missing...
oh there it is  (thumbup)?
There are a number of links thoughout the forum to other threads. These links have .co.uk in them, e.g. http://www.smaxownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?5717-Membership-Payments&highlight=paypal
Can we do a gobal database change to fix these?
The entire content of my Forum webmail account has disappeared, sent items too. :sob:

is there an "imported" folder there in settings? if not we will look into it as forum email should have moved across...

quite possibly - I will need to discuss with Mr Scott
what def wont work is any embedded links from the old forum(s) which refer to precise locations of things/posts with .co.uk
you can't make an omlette with out breaking some eggs, and those links will be forever broken, unless the mods and admins are offering to spend time fixing them...

.co.uk url not found here
as I've said we are waiting for the internet to catch up, this includes your ISP and its nameservers, thats why for some people it works and for some it doesnt. We've tinkered a bit as well with specific directory redirects which may help

If members could report any broken links found we will get straight on to it.
Clicked on "New Posts" and got,

Hi Russell
If this happens again please can you screen shot the error and send it to us by email please as we need to see exactly what's on the error page.

Everything that was on my screen, 'cept the browser heading, is posted above.
Do you need the browser heading too?
Afraid so and that goes for any error any of you see, we know we had an SQL error yesterday morning which has been fixed, it's just a case of tracking stuff down, also there are two types of error message, rarely you may see a vBulletin logo, it's important we know when it's one of these so we can go through the logs
overall though, how is everyone "feeling" the site, slower or faster or the same?
*salutes*
Message received Wing Commander Zozzer!
Seemed slower than usual logging on today, but then again, that coudl well be down to all my colleagues arriving in the office at the same time and getting straight on t'internet!
What happened last night?
i couldnt get on either paul, sites just come back now..
What happened last night?
Was strange. I had no issues accessing the site last night though others did.
I couldn't access first thing this morning.
according to the twitter thing , it was mostly virgin media peeps that had problems....
hi everyone - if you do a search for 'DNS problems UK' you'll see that its not just Virgin Media customers that have had problems this week with DNS, Be/O2, BT and others have suffered
if I find out more I'll post it here
just a point z , clicking on the old .co.uk smax url doesnt produce anything , so i was wondering how many members haven't got the new url email or that particular email is in their junk folder....these members probably think the sites gone...

Stan, what is the exact URL you are "clicking" (I assume you have it as a favourite)?

That one works for me - it rediects to .com with a message (only displayed for a moment) which says "We apologise for the inconvenience but please click here to visit the S-MAX Owners Club Forum. "
I did have a favourite which had something like "index.php" at the end, which did not work (I have deleted it now).

Hmmm, I got a different error message earlier!
Easiest option would be to put in a 301 redirect into the .htaccess file on the old site IMO.
That's a good idea about the 301 but we don't have access to that server anymore I don't think
jim/jay.. i get a blank page when clicking on co.uk...i'm ok with the new dot com site [when i can get on] its just loads of members must have co.uk bookmarked [like i had] and get the blank page , the same as me...

hi Scarey, Mr Scott assures me all redirects have been put in place so what you are getting sounds like a local error, one way to fix this is to reset or flush your browsers cache however this may cause problems with other sites you have pre-cached to look at. I've asked Mr Scott to post a more thorough and accurate explanation when he can.
As we've said numerous times this week and before, moving the site form a .co.uk to a .com and from one server to another is no small undertaking, and its going to take a while for things to catch up - all I can say is please be patient, refresh you browser, reset your bookmarks, restart your router and browser and engine if necessary and persist.
many thanks
Z
mr z, i and many others greatly appreciate what you are doing for the site...i have no problems [when i can get on] , i'm only pointing out that members that have bookmarked 'co.uk' might not be aware of the new dot com site..

Good morning all.
Just to let you know that there are indeed multiple re-directs in place to hopefully nudge anyone with out-of-date bookmarks or shortcuts to the right location. And it is a 301 redirect in the root of the relevant domains but for the life of me I couldn’t get that to work at .co.uk/forum/ so I placed a javascript redirect in there, and just a little earlier I also added the same as an index.php file in the same location.
The domain settings were updated almost a week ago to point to the new servers so even the slowest DNS should have caught up by now, although the DNS outage late last week won’t have helped the situation.
With these settings, the multiple re-directs in multiple locations, and also the updates on the Club’s Facebook and Twitter pages it’s doubtful anybody would come to the conclusion the site has vanished.
And it is a 301 redirect in the root of the relevant domains but for the life of me I couldn’t get that to work at .co.uk/forum/ so I placed a javascript redirect in there, and just a little earlier I also added the same as an index.php file in the same location.
301's are always tricky when dynamic content is in use, I remember struggling with mod_rewrite and "RewriteEngine on" etc. to try and get a site to redirect a directory a few years ago.

Dunno if it's been mentioned yet or not (Not had much sleep!) but http://www.smaxownersclub.co.uk/forum/forum.php gives a blank page!
hi Mini Jim - yes we know we have a few links to tie up - mostly these will just be washed over by Google as it updates
now go and take it easy and have a beer!

There's never enough time in this universe (I blame the tribbles), but I've just looked again at this issue and I believe I now have a better and more complete solution in place. Any previously working direct links like Jim's example or http://www.smaxownersclub.co.uk/forum/content.php etc should now redirect to the appropriate place here on the .com site.
Excellent work again. Thanks.
I think, dare I say it, less than a month in, that we are at a natural resting point as most of the pressing issues have been sorted out. (*waits for server to fall over*)
if there is anything else please screen shot it if you can and post here
thanks

Is it just my Norton, although I have set up a "login" this site (alone) never seems to pick up the password and log me automatically, or on a single click.... Just me?
Just received a "VBulletin Database Error" when I submitted a post: reloaded the page and it reverted back to where it should have been
Thanks Russell

If I click on the Forum tab then one of the drop down menus (Community etc), the menu is cropped below a certain point.
This only happens in 1.1 and only with internet explorer so far as I can tell.
Might just be me, although it did it on my daughters laptop too.
Also notice the search box isn't in the same place in ie8.
Fine chrome and firefox.
Steve TR
11-09-2010, 16:34
Alan, I had this problem too but could make it go by zooming ie8 to 100% or greater.
thanks for the spots chaps.
IE is the worst browser for a number of reasons  beyond certainly our control as MicroSoft just break all the standards and make it up as they go along - however I will try and make this compatible with manual tweaks
it may take a while...

I can confirm this also happens in ie9 beta *damn Micro$oft*
not a great deal we can do about this I'm afraid Steve, again its M$ not following international guidelines and thinking they are so "big" that they "set the standard and **** everyone else"
we are watching the forthcoming release of vBulletin v4.1 (v4 was a dog) with interest as it has a lot of bug fixes and improvements but experience shows that their quality control isn't good. Our current mantra with the site after all the "past issues" is uptime is everything
thanks for the feedback and keep it coming, you are all our QC testers!
Had a database error and a internal server error 500 just now.

Me too. Tried to send a PM, got the error, tried to resend got the error again.
Looked in my sent folder and it is showing as sent, but I will try to send it again just to be sure.
hi chaps
we're watching the situation for now and are aware of "issues" today
