    This handy little fault code reader in its standard form can read fault codes and live engine data from any car with an OBDII port via the HS CAN BUS.

    So, why do we need a modified version and what does the modification do?

    O.K. Here is the geeky bit:
    As well as the HS communications BUS the S-Max uses a secondary MS CAN BUS to communicate with certain modules within the car. If for instance one of these MS CAN modules stored a fault code, a regular ELM327 would not see this (as it has no native support for MS CAN) and could incorrectly report a fault condition.
    Ford have chosen to locate the MS BUS on some unused pins of the OBDII port, so for the ELM to read the MS BUS we need to connect these pins to the ELM's BUS input. To accomplish this, our ELM has been fitted with a switch so that it can see both the MS and HS bus independently.
    For this to work correctly we need compatible software and our software of choice is FORSCAN: http://forscan.org/home.html

    With this software it is possible to:
    • Read and reset Diagnostic Trouble Codes from all modules
    • Fast reading of engine sensors' data
    • Run diagnostic procedures

    This invaluable tool is a must have for any S-Max owner - especially when you consider Ford are charging around £60 for a single fault diagnosis session, this device will pay for itself after the first use!

    Our modified ELM is also fully compatible with Elmconfig and can be set to a baud rate of 500K if needed (see separate thread for this software).
    Elmconfig allows you to modify features otherwise hard coded into your car and will allow you to enable retrofits such as towbar activation and auto locking plus many many more options.
