Yes it's true, not satisfied with showing the all new drop dead gorgeous Ford GT recently at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Ford UK have finally announced the 2015 Mustang prices for the UK in Right Hand Drive. That's right, for the first time ever, you will be able to buy a RHD Mustang at your local UK Ford dealership.
Prices start at £28,995 for the 4 cylinder 2.3 litre 300hp ecoboost, which of course is lovely - but the Mustang we think you will all be really interested in is the 5.0 V8 435hp GT version, which starts at £32,995. Best of all you can specify a MANUAL gear box - yes, really.
In a world where any half decent new V6 or V8 petrol engined Jaguar or German thing will only come with an auto flappy paddle slush box*, which no matter how 'far they have come' really is still all a bit too PlayStation, Ford hit the ball out of the park with the option of a good 6 speed manual gearbox.
Oh there are options and things, but really, are you bothered? A manual 5.0 V8 for under £33k? Well done Ford. That Toyota GT86/BRZ is looking really overpriced no matter how good the handling is, and as for the Audi A5 and BMW 4 series, well yes of course they will be a bit more refined, but expensive, and dull, very dull, compared to the 2015 Mustang UK price points.
Add to this the entertaining prospect of Ford performance parts from Mountune, and the even more jaw dropping fordracingparts.com, and the petrol head in your life should be grinning from ear to ear when you show them this.
At least one of the SMAXOC webteam is drooling and off to count his pennies.
Ford UK finally seem to have remembered what they are really for: as well as making good value, nice to drive, safe, family cars, there is a long history of bringing performance motoring within the reach of normal British people. Remember the Lotus Cortina, the Capri, XR2, XR3 and Sierra Cosworth? We do, and many of our British members do as well, we bet. Yes, there has been the Focus ST and RS over the years, but somehow this move by Ford UK seems to have upped the game a bit, building on the excellent new(ish) Fiesta ST success. Competition amongst car manufacturers for your 'hard earned' is a good thing.
All we need now is for Ford to go racing again at LeMans 24H with a properly funded WEC team and perhaps we are entering a new golden age for the blue oval.
2015 has got off to a cracking start. All we need now is to finally be able to see, try and buy the new Ford S-MAX.
*There are two or three notable exceptions to this. We may deal with them in a later piece.
